LG 3 - Graph and Interpret Quadratics

UNIT 5 - Intro to Quadratics

Learning Objective:   BTEOTPSWBAT......
  • find, describe, and graph various parts of a quadratic equation.

MONDAY LESSON
1. watch the videos for {y-intercept, axis of symmetry, graphing calculator}
2. use that knowledge to complete the "Tell me Three" worksheet INDIVIDUALLY!!!

3. From the "tell me three" worksheet, you will complete all of the part 1 topics for each problem.   We will do the part 2 topics next time.

Part 1:

We already know how to .........

Find the Roots/Zeros/Solutions/X-intercepts
  • Find using the zero product rule (LG1)
  • Find using the quadratic formula (LG2)

Summary:
  • Substitute 0 for x.
  • Solve for y.

Using the graphing calculator

Part 2:

Creating an x & y table of values

Maximum and Minimum of a Parabola

Is there a max or a min? Does the graph open up or down?
When the value of    a  is positive, the graph opens up,
                                                  The vertex is a MIN

When the value of   a  is negative, the graph opens downward
                                                  The vertex is a MAX

or    Read here

Summary:
  • Find the axis of symmetry first.
  • Use the x-coordinate from the axis of symmetry to find the value of y.
  • Write the ordered pair.

CREATE A POSTER
Choose a partner you can work well with.
Decide who is partner A, and partner B.

Partner A: Responsible for the neatness, organization, and labeling of the graph portion of the poster. Make sure everything is labeled.

Partner B: Responsible for the neatness and organization of the calculations portions of the poster. Make sure it is labeled and organized.

1. Open the document "Poster Word Problems" attached at the bottom.

2. Decide which problem you want to make a poster with. All problems are approximately the same difficulty.

 3.  You will NEATLY show all of your work to find each part of the graph.

Make your graph and label all of the parts listed.  Label what it is and the ordered pair where it occurs:
You must include the following:
  • vertex
  • axis of symmetry
  • Vertex -  Is it a max or a min?
  • an x/y table of at least 5 ordered pairs on the graph
  • The solutions  (roots/zeros/x-intercepts)
  • The y-intercept
