LG 1: Introduction to Functions

UNIT 8 - Relations/Functions/Graphs

Learning Objective:   BTEOTPSWBAT......
  • determine if a relation is a function by looking at a table, a mapping diagram, or a graph
  • evaluate a function for a given value using an equation or graph
  • State the domain and range of a function using interval notation, determined from a graph

WARM UP - The Basics

1. IS IT A FUNCTION? (from a table)
Since the x value repeats in the first example, it is NOT A FUNCTION! We only care about the x value.

2. IS IT A FUNCTION? (from a mapping diagram)
In the 2nd example, we would have the ordered pairs (5,2) and (5,9).  You can see that the domain value(x value) repeats so it is NOT A FUNCTION.

3. IS IT A FUNCTION? (from a graph)
Use the vertical line test:

4. EVALUATE THE FUNCTION

5. EVALUATE THE FUNCTION (from a graph)

7. FINDING DOMAIN/RANGE FROM A GRAPH
